Brief Plot Overview:

  • Charles Foster Kane is a wealthy newspaper publisher, when he passes alone in his mansion a reporter is assigned to decifer Kanes dying words “rosebud”. His investigation of Kanes past gradually reveals the complex and facinating life he lived. The audience is able to see Kanes transition from obscurity to fame and fortune and the consequences that followed.

Tragic Hero Characterisations:

  • Charles Foster Kane is a tragic hero because he had a remarkable life yet it ended in tragedy.
  • His tragic flaw is that he craves power, likes to be in control – a huge icon. He can also be ignorant. He had no control over being seperated from his parents as a child and now desires control over every aspect of his life. For example his confrontation with Gettys. Kane chose to throw the election rather than allowing Gettys to believe he held any power or authority over him.
  • He begins charming and the audience likes him.
  • He loses everything he loves and is left with only materialistic things.
  • Before he dies he realises what he has lost and then dies before he an fix anything.
