Essay Question Practice

5. The moments in a text that criticise society are those that teach us the most.

Samantha & Kirsten

INTRODUCTION

Women in all industries have been over-sexualised for as long as I could remember. Taken advantage of, harassed and coerced into believing they can only succeed by impressing powerful men. Women have suffered at the hands of society’s manipulative objectification for too long. In the 2010 film, ‘Black Swan’ director Darren Aronofsky portrays ballerina Nina as a victim of workplace male dominance and sexual harassment. Beneath the graceful movement and silk costumes of ballet lies the rotting corruption of gender and sexual power. Aronofsky used Nina’s transformation throughout the film as a way of criticising society’s expectations of women.

BODY 1

  • Thomas only considers Nina for the role of swan queen after she goes to his office to ask for the role and he forcingly kisses her and she bites his lip and pulls back.
  • “Ow, Fuck! You bit me.” – Thomas
  • “The real work will be your metamorphis into the black swan. I saw a flash of her yesterday. Get ready to show me more of that bite.”
